SUMMARY:Older adults\, a Special Population class (Teach)
DESCRIPTION:Older adults \nWith the increasing numbers of our older population\, we now find that more and more older people are looking to take part in exercise classes. The benefits of continued activity are being promoted from every angle\, and with more health care professional recommending patients exercise there is a definite need for more classes. Although gyms and health clubs have traditionally catered for a younger age group many are now adding classes for the over 50’s\, even so many older people still feel they have no place to go. \nAt first glance\, Pilates seems to be the ideal solution however as we know not everything in Pilates is suitable for all clients. As with any class taught our primary aim must be to offer our clients’ safe\, effective\, and appropriate exercise. In working with an older age group\, there are many more factors to consider: \nWorkshop aims and objectives \n\nUnderstanding the ageing process\nDiscussing the common medical conditions that affect older people\nDefining our responsibility as exercise teachers\nUnderstanding our limitations as exercise teachers\nSignposting to national guidelines and current practice\n\nThe aim of this workshop is to give an overview only of working with clients 50+\, by understanding the age related changes that occur we as teachers can be more prepared to adapt and change our technique and offer good informed advise about how to exercise. \nCost £350 (early bird £300 booked 2 weeks in advance) \nDiscounts for PiN £240 \n

SUMMARY:Understanding abdominal control\, interactive abdominal scanning and decision making in Pilates\, Special Population (Teach)
DESCRIPTION:Sunday  12th January 2019 10 – 5pm \nUnderstanding Abdominal control\, interactive abdominal scanning and decision making in Pilates -1 day \nA lecture on\, and demonstration of\, real time biofeedback using ultra-sound scanning of the abdominal wall to show the specificity of the abdominal muscle contractions. \nTransversus abdominis is an increasingly familiar muscle thanks to the ground-breaking work of the Queensland University Physiotherapy Research Team (Jull\, Richardson\, Hodges and Hides) and the dissemination in the UK via Kinetic Control (Comerford and Mottram). But\, are you familiar with what a specific transversus abdominal contraction actually feels like? Or looks like on a scan? When does an oblique contraction come in? Warrick will also relate normal breathing patterns into pre-Pilates exercise. \n“Typical Pilates assessment includes a ‘Roll down’\, an exercise in standing that uses a sequential flexion pattern of the spine\, through to the hips as the hands reach towards the floor. The observational skills of the Pilates Teacher come into play\, looking at sequencing\, flow\, tightness’s\, rotations of the trunk\, asymmetries\, and decisions are made from there. Teachers take in to account how the client is ‘today’\, and ‘in relation to previous sessions.’ \nIt is when special populations are involved that such assessments possibly become inadequate. It is in the blur between injury and risk that Pilates Teachers decisions become potentially more serious. ” \nCost £150 (early bird £125 booked 4 weeks in advance) \nDiscounts for PiN £100 \n

SUMMARY:Week 1: Pilates Then and Now\, a Foundation in Pilates class (Teach)
DESCRIPTION:Foundation in Pilates – this series of 4 introductory workshops will expand your knowledge and prepare you for the Essential Matwork course. \nAre you interested in training but not sure if you’re ready to apply for the full year course? Then this is for you. \n\nImprove your understanding of the body and how it works\nExtend your personal practice\nExpand your knowledge of the technique\nUnderstand the exercises in more detail\n\nWe will introduce you to the principals and fundamentals that the technique is built upon and you will gain an insight into what makes a good Pilates teacher \nThursday 7th January 10.30 – 1.30pm \nWeek One: Pilates Then and Now – Learn the real history of the Pilates Method\, see how it has evolved over the generations\, and how we have adapted our exercises due to better understanding of the body. Looking at several key exercises in detail we will review the concept of flat back\, imprint and neutral in relation to teaching Pilates today. \nThursday 14th January 10.30 – 1.30pm \nWeek Two: Centre and alignment. Much of our method concentrates on the use of the centre. Our aim is to provide a stable centre from which all movements can flow and is essential in improving posture\, technique and can help in injury prevention. Alignment is the key to what makes Pilates so different from other exercise techniques; it is the precise manner in which it is performed that makes it so effective. Good placement of the body whilst exercising ensures control and isolation of the working muscles\, economy of effort and reduction of tension. \nThursday 21st January 10.30 – 1.30pm \nWeek Three: Posture and Stability. The aim of every Pilates session should be to improve Posture and Stability. Attaining good posture is a slow process but one which has many benefits\, improving posture is not as simple as aligning our skeleton we have to maintain this whilst our bodies perform the many complex movements of everyday life. In Pilates all movements must come from a strong supported centre\, we will look at the concept of stability to help us achieve this fine tuning of muscles to support our movements \nThursday 28th January 10.30 – 1.30pm \nWeek 4: Sequential spinal and whole body movement. Our goal in Pilates is to achieve precise controlled movement\, by focusing on sequential spinal movement we aim to improve overall flexibility and joint health. Pilates was designed as series of exercises that flowed seamlessly one into the next to create a whole body movement system\, integrating the mind and body. To achieve this you have to perform the movements with all the Pilates principles in mind. \nFoundation in Pilates FREE for anyone signing up to the Essential Matwork

SUMMARY:Back pathology and movement directions - a special population course (Teach)
DESCRIPTION:Back Pathology and movement direction – Sally Roberts 1 day \nThis workshop has been developed to help us gain a good understanding of the common range of pathologies we come across in our work. Each participant is given a topic to research and present to the rest of the group\, which will be discussed and reviewed by Sally. \n\nPsychology of chronic Lower back pain\nHypermobility Syndrome\nBack Surgery\, and post operative long term management\nScoliosis\nExtension related lumbar spine to include spondilolythesis and facet joint syndrome\nSacro–iliac Joint Dysfunction (SIJ)\nWhiplash\nDisc related injuries\nAnkylosing Spondylitis\nThoracic spine issues and thoracic outlet syndrome\n\nMovement Direction Considerations \nWe will workshop each movement direction\, the emphasis of the exercise\, movement faults and cautions/contraindications. From the clients’ medical history and postural presentation we may choose to modify the exercises or exclude exercises. \nThe consideration of movement direction is useful when putting together a balanced class. Namely: flexion\, extension\, rotation\, side flexion both in the trunk and peripherals. The layering of more complex movements should be integrated as the client progresses. The evaluation of how a client performs in a particular direction of movement informs us how we will facilitate improvements in the execution of the exercise. \n Cost £175 (early bird £150 booked 4 weeks in advance) \nDiscounts for PiN £120

SUMMARY:Week 3: Posture and Stability\, a Foundation in Pilates class (Teach)
DESCRIPTION:Foundation in Pilates – this series of 4 introductory workshops will expand your knowledge and prepare you for the Essential Matwork course. \n\n\nAre you interested in training but not sure if you’re ready to apply for the full year course? Then this is for you. \n\nImprove your understanding of the body and how it works\nExtend your personal practice\nExpand your knowledge of the technique\nUnderstand the exercises in more detail\n\nWe will introduce you to the principals and fundamentals that the technique is built upon and you will gain an insight into what makes a good Pilates teacher \nSunday 5th January  2025  10 – 1pm   \nWeek Three: Posture and Stability. The aim of every Pilates session should be to improve Posture and Stability. Attaining good posture is a slow process but one which has many benefits\, improving posture is not as simple as aligning our skeleton we have to maintain this whilst our bodies perform the many complex movements of everyday life. In Pilates all movements must come from a strong supported centre\, we will look at the concept of stability to help us achieve this fine tuning of muscles to support our movements \nStay for the afternoon \nSunday 5th January 2020  2 – 5pm  \nWeek 4: Sequential spinal and whole body movement. \n\n\n\n\nFoundation in Pilates FREE for anyone signing up to the Essential Matwork
